SELF ASSESSMENT 

Complete the self assessment (Chapter Two) 

The assessment is the critical first step of the process that will help you take charge of your career.

Explore Job Opportunities (Chapter Three) 

  •   Identify Desirable Occupations (Job Series)

  •  Reference Appendix B and Assessments in Chapter Two

  •  Locate Merit Promotion Program (MPP) Job Announcements

  •  Check with your agency’s HR department

  •  Locate Qualification Standards For Desirable Occupations

  •  Obtain Copies of Position Descriptions From HR

Select Possible Occupations and Jobs. (Chapter Three/Appendix B - D) 

  •  Use Table 3-1 to list desirable occupations.

  •  Refer to the career development checklist in Chapter Four 

  •  Locate the blank IDP form in Chapter Four.

Standard Word Document Forms (Word 6.0 for Windows) are posted on this site. You can download these forms and use them to complete your IDP and assessments.  

  •  List your short and long term goals

  •  List KSAs needed to achieve goals 

  •  Identify developmental assignments 

  •  Identify training that is needed to support your plan 

  •  Prepare a draft IDP

 Use the blank forms and sample IDPs in Chapter Four 

SUPERVISORY MEETING

  •  Notify your supervisor that you have developed a draft IDP for his/her review.

  •  Schedule a meeting with your supervisor.       Scheduled Date: _________

  •  Prepare for the meeting (Chapter Four).

  •  Supervisor and Employee come to agreement and finalize the plan.

  •  Establish quarterly reviews and set next meeting date.   1st Review Date: _________

 LOCATE JOB OPPORTUNITIES (WHAT’s AVAILABLE)

This could be either developmental assignments to improve your skills for the job you now occupy or new positions that you identified during your assessment.  Locate developmental assignments with your supervisors input and through your networking contacts. To identify possible new positions that meet your career goals take the following steps: 

  •  Review Chapter Seven and Identify job vacancies

  •  Request informational interviews.

  •  Research agencies through the United States Government Manual, the Federal Career Directory,
    various agency web sites, and the paperback version of "The Book Of U.S. Government Jobs."

  •  Review occupational listings of federal jobs by title and series (Appendix B). Review the
    Skills Index (Appendix E) and the Occupations by Education and Training Categories
    (Appendix D) to cross reference  skills/degrees to occupational titles.

APPLYING FOR A JOB

 

  •   Complete and sign ALL application forms received with the MPP announcement.
    (Type them if possible). Follow the guidelines outlined in Chapter Nine.

This excellent resource helps job seekers describe their skills and experience in the most eye-catching readable way possible to edge out the competition. You’ll learn how to write a professional federal resume and application, use key buzz words, complete your KSAOs, and develop job search strategies that work. Includes helpful sample resumes and applications.  Available at many libraries or you can order a copy toll free with all major credit cards at 1-800-782-7424.  

  •  Retain a copy of your application and all other forms required in the announcement.
    These copies can be used for other bids. However, an original signature must be on all copies sent.

  •  Send in the completed forms to the address specified on the announcement.

  •  Applications must arrive by no later than the closing date of the announcement for
    your application to be considered.

 THE INTERVIEW

  •  Review Chapter Ten to prepare for job interviews.
